2009 Big Day Out Announces Final Lineup

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Christmas is just around the corner, and so is the Big Day Out! We are excited to announce the final artists who will be touring with the Big Day Out plus the local additions in each city.

Be on guard for the avant-garde when Fantomas lurch back into life at Big Day Out 2009. Created in the murky depths of Mike Patton’s busy music laboratory in California, Fantomas’s four studio albums have been noisy, cartoonish, sci-fi, filmic, heavy, hilarious, and always experimental. With Patton joined by Buzz Osborne on guitar (Melvins), Trevor Dunn on bass (Mr Bungle) and Dale Crover on drums (Melvins), this super-tight band creates sounds and energy previously thought not humanly possible. Fantomas are coming to put a little delirium in your Big Day Out.

Who is that man in the three-piece suit and the natty brogues? He is Son Of Dave, and to witness him at Big Day Out is to witness the blues dragged kicking and howling into the 21st Century. It all began one Christmas in Manitoba, Canada, when father gave young Benjamin Darvill a harmonica and a shaker. Now he stirs thoughts of Beck, the White Stripes and Tom Waits all rolled into one. See Son Of Dave summon the future of the blues at Lilyworld during Big Day Out 2009.

Rockabilly’s best kept secret, Barrence Whitfield is outta the bag and set to shake Lilyworld to its very foundations at Big Day Out 2009. He grew up on gospel but in Boston he found the truth in rock ‘n’ roll. He’s got the funk, he’s got the soul… basically, he’s got Little Richard covered. But wait, there’s more – Barrence will be backed by the Rockwiz Orkestra, as seen on TV! Mark Ferrie, Peter Luscombe and James Black have backed an amazing array of artists on SBS TV’s music quiz show, but none have the lungs nor the boundless energy of soul sensation Barrence Whitfield.

Brisbane four-piece The Butterfly Effect are well known for pushing the sonic envelope with their rampaging brand of rock’n’roll. Their latest album released in September 2008, Final Conversation Of Kings was recorded on the Central Coast of NSW and is a prime example of their hard driving sound, embodied with lead singer Clint Boge’s scintillating vocals. The Butterfly Effect will take to the Big Day Out stage in 2009 to stand and deliver a theatrical live set full of ebbs and flows that will leave your desire for rocking out thoroughly sated.

If you like your discos Freakish, then T-Rek is the DJ for you. Part time drummer for Infusion, part time musician/producer and head of Freakshow Disco Productions in Melbourne, T-Rek (Tarek Smallman) is due for one date with the disco dance-floor you don’t want to miss! T-Rek’s first official DJ mix CD Vinyl Pusher presents Freakshow Disco is due for download in January 2009 but to catch one genre-surfing, diverse mix of anything-goes dirty beats to softer jams, make sure you check out T-Rek spinning wild originals and remixes at the Big Day Out.

Regurgitator front man Quan is back aboard flight BDO with his very own project that joyously embraces the best of indie, hip hop and electro pop. Quan’s new release The Amateur is a “on again off again requiem to those heady amateur days” and with killer pop riffs and beats like “Year of the Jerk”, “Gimme Gimme” and “The One”… this IS the beat you’ve been looking for, so pull on your dancing sneakers and come find it at the Big Day Out.

I Heart Hiroshima will bring their effervescent musical hurricane to the Big Day Out in 2009. This Brisbane three piece of two guitarists and a drummer emerged from a series of audacious house parties in Bris-vegas and in 2007 released their debut album Tuff Teef. Wear your heart on your sleeve with I Heart Hiroshima as they serve up a sonic layer cake of pop punk deliciousness at BDO! (Gold Coast & Sydney Shows)

Formed in Dubbo in 1977, The Reels were one of Australia’s most respected pop bands of the ’80s with their hit singles, “Love Will Find A Way” and “Prefab Heart” and 1981’s classic album Quasimodo’s Dream featuring the song of the same title. The mid 80’s also saw The Reels topping the Australian charts with their very special renditions of classic tracks Bacharach/Alpert “This Guy’s in Love with You” and Creedence Clearwater Revivals “Bad Moon Rising”. In 2007, Dave Mason released his first album in more than 15 years, Reelsville along with Reel To Reel 1978 – 1992. We are delighted The Reels will be wandering into the enchanted garden of the Lilyworld at BDO in 09. (Sydney & Melbourne shows)

2009 Southbound Family Grows

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Southbound 2009 may have sold out in record time but the work is not finished yet! Sunset Events is proud to announce another round of superb talent as well as a festival-wide eclectic explosion of visual art, circus performances, dance, experimental art and more, completing the Southbound 2009 experience!

STAGEBOUND
It’s official – the mighty fine Will Stoker & The Embers have taken out the StageBound final and are headed straight to the Southbound stage. The band’s profile has risen steadily since their inception back in 2006. After winning the National Campus Battle Of The Bands competition in 2007 the five-piece have been building an impressive following of punters on both sides of the continent, drawn to Stoker’s unhinged stage persona and impressive musicianship and song craft. Their latest EP – The Five Beds For Bitsy EP – impressively displays the full range of sound and emotion at their collective grasp. Catch them at Southbound.

JB SEED
The JB Seed project has sown its name as one of the finest initiatives in Australia. Just ask Queensland’s The John Steel Singers. These purveyors of glorious backyard summer pop melodies are the latest recipients of the much-esteemed grant and are now coming to Southbound!

SONICBIDS
And after aurally trekking through some of the finest entries we’ve ever heard (more than 250 in fact), we’re mighty excited to announce the Sonicbids winner is The Shiny Brights. These Adelaide indie kids were born in a riverside warehouse amongst an army of used whitegoods. They recently launched their debut EP Let’s Not And Say We Did to a sold out crowd in their hometown. The boys are rapidly becoming renowned for their explosive and surprising live shows.

BLUEJUICE
We regret to announce that The Cribs have withdrawn from their national tour and thus Southbound. However, we are excited that Sydney crackers Bluejuice will be stepping up to the microphone. We welcome them to the Southbound family.

COCONUT CLUB - SATURDAY
It’s all in the name friends! The Coconut Club makes a return to the festival on Saturday and is the place to go for your dizzy fix of rhythmic mayhem, spiced with chilled beats and shaken grooves. Catch Johnny Gleeson (fresh from his summer residency at the iconic Pasha Nightclub in Ibiza), Micah, Swami Adima, The Audiofiles, Phil Cooker, Sharif Galal, Charlie Bucket, Frankie Button, Captain Namu, Pussy Shoogah, The Soul Purpose and percussion specialists Alex Koresis and Adam Cousins.

GROOVE TENT - FRIDAY
We all like a good ol’ fashioned groove. And there’s no better place to find it than the Groove Tent in Base Camp on Friday. We’ve drafted the finest instigators of bottom-shaking this side of the solar system, including: DJ Nina (jetting in from Bali, where she holds residencies at Ku De Ta and Double Six), Captain Quirk, Sugar Blue Burlesque Show, Pussy Shoogah, Damian John, The Takers, Kit Pop, Frankie Button, Swami Adima, Dave Miller, DJ Philly, Robbie Rogue, Cool Hand Luke, Alex Koresis and Adam Cousins. After midnight on Friday fringe performers Sugar Blue Burlesque and Captain Quirk will bring the night home, followed by Dreamstate Circus and the Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group after midnight on Saturday.

LOUNGE/OPEN MIC
We’ve gathered the finest crooners of the intimate stage to garrison the Lounge in Base Camp. On Friday catch DJ Bilsby, DJ Travis, The Soul Purpose, Main Ingredient/Dan De Silva, Xave Brown, Felicity Groom, Rachel & Henry Climb A Hill, Carus, Mel Timms, Arons Crucade and Simon Kelly. Then on Saturday catch DJ Bilsby, The Soul Purpose, Main Ingredient/Dan De Silva, Jordi James, Carus and DJ Missile. And why not jump up and have a tinker yourself? There will be plenty of open mic slots for the rising star in you.

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

The gypsy caravan of enlightenment that is the NEVEREVERLAND festival is set to sweep our wide brown land again this December. 2007 saw NEVEREVERLAND’s ecstatic inauguration, headlined by seminal dance music androids Daft Punk. This year, to coincide with the 10 year anniversary of renowned Australian independent record label Modular, NEVEREVERLAND is proud to be throwing all but the entire Modular roster plus some likeminded spirits onto the bus for a raucous celebration of a decade of decadence and dance.

The Presets, Klaxons, Hercules & Love Affair, Cut Copy, Whitest Boy Alive, Ladyhawke, The Bumblebeez, Muscles, Van She, Tame Impala, The Bang Gang Deejays, AJAX, The Lost Valentinos, Mission Control, Temper Trap, Canyons, Pepperoni, Andee Van Damage and Bag Raiders are the first names to be announced to take part in this, the second coming of NEVEREVERLAND.

NEVEREVERLAND 2007 was, to many people, the pinnacle of their life. Daft Punk had never toured Australia before, and it wasn’t looking all that likely they ever would. NEVEREVERLAND saw their first and potentially last ever trip to our shores, and the shows were a blindingly euphoric experience for all lucky enough to grab tickets.

As a gift to those coming to celebrate the 10 years in bizness, every ticket holder will receive a Modular birthday sampler featuring the highs and lows of 10 years at sea.

NEVEREVERLAND is Modular’s 10th birthday party, and EVERYONE is invited.

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Perth is about to go Stereosonic.

After announcing the finest fleet of beat-makers on the planet, the next generation of Stereosonic acts coming to Claremont Showground on Sunday, November 30.

First release tickets have completely sold out – but you can still secure your pass to Stereosonic 2008 in the second ticket release. We’re completely blown away with the response to the inaugural Perth Stereosonic.

Canada’s multi-talented superstar Stu Stone will be heading south for Stereosonic 2009, which takes in dates across the nation. He’s one of the most talented titans of trance of his generation and the second biggest act on Paul van Dyk’s VANDIT label – he is Giuseppe Ottaviani. Voted Best Live Act at the Trance awards in both 2004 and 2006, Ottaviani’s latest release No More Alone blends gorgeous melodies with fresh electronic sounds and floor shuddering beats and sumptuous breakdowns.

One of Australia’s finest fish in the sea of electronic music, Sam La More has worked with the greats of the dance of the dance, R&B and pop worlds. His production credits span the globe and his beats are consistent club faves. We welcome him home to Australia for Stereosonic.

Also joining these three icons of the music world are local electronic greats Piet El v DJ Freestyle, Dan Ash & Dave Mule, Hickey, Dasha & Poonie, Benny T & Luca, Zelimir, Maxwell, Paul Scott, Rousa v Simon Barwood, Dr Willis, Brad Every, Jus Haus and Sketch.

They join Sneaky Sound System, Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, PNAU, Midnight Juggernauts, Booka Shade, Infected Mushroom, DJ Hell, The Crookers, Kaz James, TV Rock, Vitalic, Japanese Popstars, DJ Funk (ed banger), Tommie Sunshine, Headman, Don Diablo, Mowgli, Dave Nada, Devlin and Darko (BBC/Spank Rock DJs), Mr Maqs (ed banger), Ajax and Andy Murphy in the ultimate day of beats and bliss.

First Release tickets are completely sold out. Second release tickets at $95 + booking fee are available from www.stereosonic.com.au and www.moshtix.com.au
