2008 Rollercoaster Festival Review

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Saturday 27th December 2008
Mandurah Western Foreshore

Another warm summer day greeted the thousands of kids that turned up in Mandurah for the fourth instalment of the Rollercoaster Festival. Being the only rock festival situated in Mandurah, it has become something that a lot of locals really look forward to and something to do during the Christmas break that isn’t necessarily family based. Unfortunately today there were many issues with crowd control and many complaints about the ever rising drink prices.

Perth’s own Tame Impala were on stage early to the growing stage and their reputation has continued to spread around WA thanks to playing as many gigs and festivals as they can. Their psychedelic sound was not what everybody expected but it was definitely well received with flashbacks for many to the 70’s. There was bongo solos, crazy dancing and ten minute songs that had people in the crowd swaying and dancing along. A great cover of Blue Boy’s Remember Me was the highlight of their set.

After a short break French electro pop outfit The Teenagers walked on stage excited and ready to try and withstand the Australian heat. Vocalist Michael Szpiner announced with his French accent that this was the first time the band had been to Perth and that they loved it here despite the heat and that he could only stand on one side of the stage due to being barefoot and half of the stage covered in sunlight. The band sounded great but half of the crowd were not expecting the flamboyant frontman and did not appreciate his dancing. Three girls from the front were invited on stage to sing along to the hit ‘Homecoming‘ and did really well despite giggling throughout.

Operator Please were on next and they are not strangers to music festivals in WA having appeared in many of them over the last couple of years. The band have changed a bit with new keyboardist Chris Holland replacing the departed Sarah Gardiner and violinist Taylor Henderson getting a lot more involved with singing. The band also no longer do their cover of Devo’s Whip It and has been replaced by a cover of Salt n Pepa’s Push It. It was about this part of the day where the crowd started throwing plastic bottles onto the stage getting very close to hitting band members. Vocalist Amandah Wilkinson caught one person throwing a bottle and proceeded to call them a cunt and that if they didn’t want to hear the band then they could fuck off. The band then continued on with their set and as expected ‘Just A Song About Ping Pong‘ generated a huge cheer from the crowd as well as some crazy dancing.

It was then time for a bit of a change in style as electro rockers Cut Copy started to play. As the festival was starting to run a bit behind schedule Cut Copy were forced to only play 8 songs but they did a great job in playing them despite the tough circumstances. There was also sound sound issues early in their set but Cut Copy pleased the crowd with songs mainly from their newest album In Ghost Colours including Nobody Lost, Nobody Found, Far Away, So Haunted, Unforgettable Season, Out There On The Ice, Lights And Music, Future and closed with their huge hit Hearts On Fire.

Perth boys Gyroscope generated a huge cheer from the crowd as they walked on stage and after the best year of their careers, they were ready to rock. Starting with All In One and Doctor Doctor the crowd were moshing and jumping around like they were possessed which is what Gyroscope hope for at all of their shows. This was followed by Beware Wolf, 1981 and Dream Vs Scream with frontman Daniel Sanders and bassist Brad Campbell almost knocking each other over with their out of control playing. Driving For The Storm and These Days allowed for a bit of a breather for the crowd as well as the band but everyone got straight back into it with Safe Forever. Sanders jumped down into the crowd and sang most of the song in the mosh pit or crowd surfing and then jumped on top of a speaker to finish the song. Gyroscope finished their set with Australia, Weapon.Enemy.Friend, a cover of Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning, Fast Girl and Snakeskin all with some idiot on top of the sound tent evading security and a huge brawl happening just near the first aid tent.

The sun was finally setting in Mandurah and Sneaky Sound System came on stage confronted with a agitated crowd. The band were in great form having just returned from a very successful string of shows in the UK. Crowd pleaser Pictures opened their set with vocalists Connie Mitchell and Black Angus syncing perfectly. This was followed by When We Were Young, 16 and Hip Hip Hooray with Connie announcing to the crowd that their new drummer was none other than Perth’s own Sibbsy, formerly with Eskimo Joe. During Crazy the crowd continued to throw bottles on stage and during UFO a bottle actually hit Connie in the face which forced her to fall down. After a minute Angus announced that Connie’s eye was now bleeding and the band walked off stage, forced to finish their set early.

After a bit of a break an announcement was made that if anything else was thrown on stage the festival would be over but The Living End were prepared to play. There was still shock in the faces of many of the crowd but The Living End pushed on playing a great set including Raise The Alarm, How Do We Know, What’s On Your Radio, Loaded Gun and Who’s Gonna Save Us. During Second Solution there was another incident when someone from the side of stage ran right up to Chris Cheney and attempted to sing along into the microphone. The intruder was quickly wrestled off stage and the band continued to finish the song. Moment In The Sun, Make The Call, Wake Up, West End Riot and All Torn Down were playing with rocking enthusiasm and a lot of sing alongs. The set and the event-filled festival finished with Roll On and White Noise and The Living End proved they are still on of the best live bands in the country.

Gyroscope Announce National Australia Tour

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Having already conducted two extremely successful tours in support of their number one album Breed Obsession, Gyroscope will take to the road throughout August and September to deliver a 36 date national tour. The Australia tour celebrates the release of the bands third single, fittingly titled Australia and is the largest tour ever undertaken by the band. Kicking off at Splendour in the Grass they’ll do a lap of the map, taking in major cities, regional towns, and suburbia along the way.

Released on Saturday July 12, Gyroscope’s new single Australia is testimony to a young band willing to challenge themselves and with this track they’ve superbly crafted an anthemic major crossover hit which has already been embraced widely by radio around the country.

Special guests for the Australia tour are Shihad who compliment one of the great bills to be seen in Australia this year with the announcement they are to tour almost everywhere with Gyroscope. Shihad return in splendid fashion with their new album Beautiful Machine which includes singles One Will Hear The Other and Vampires. Also touring are fellow WA rockers Sugar Army, one of the most exhilarating new young bands to come out of WA for sometime, who will certainly complete what will be one serious rockin’ ride on the Australia tour!

Finally, as a very special treat for their hometown fans, Gyroscope are pleased to announce their local buddies Jebediah will join the fanfare for the last major city show of the tour in Perth. It’s been a few years between drinks for Jebediah, however they recently rekindled the fire and returned to the studio to work on new material with a new album expected to be released later this year. WA fans can expect some serious rock’n’roll antics and much fanfare for what will be a fitting end to the Australia tour as all three WA bands take to the stage at Metro City in Perth!

Gyroscope @ The Paddo for EatingWA

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Saturday 19th April, 2008
The Paddington Ale House, Mt Hawthorn
Gyroscope
Calerway
Escapes Me

A special private party presented by EatingWA saw three fantastic Perth bands playing at the Paddington Ale House and a great crowd were present and eager for some rocking tunes. For a gig that was private and not advertised very much, there was a tremendous turn out and fans took advantage of a rare opportunity to see the local rockers in a low key environment. Cheap beer, wine and spirits also helped create a joyous mood and, even though it was an early start at 3pm, everybody looked to have a great afternoon.

Most people in the crowd would not have heard of Escapes Me before this afternoon and the boys in the bands took the gig in their stride. After a song or two warming up Escapes Me got into a rhythm and cranked out some old school punk that got the crowd pumped up. Sounding like early Blink 182, the young band did very well in stepping up to the challenge of opening for a couple of seasoned local bands. Escapes Me definitely have a bright future ahead of them and I hope they get the opportunity to perfect their live show with more opportunities like today.

Next up on the bill were a band that has a very full couple of months coming up. Calerway took the rock baton from Escapes Me and showed a confidence that not every young band has early in their careers. With a bunch of launch shows coming up with the release of their debut album, Calerway look set to explode on the live scene. The drumming was fierce and the vocals demanded attention as all eyes in the room focussed on the stage. If you haven’t seen Calerway live before, make sure you catch one of their album launches next month.

The crowd was only allowed a short break before the explosion of Weapon Enemy Friend blasted from the stage as Gyroscope ripped into their set. The local lads were obviously still extremely happy about their third album, Breed Obsession, debuting at number 1 on the ARIA charts and played plenty of songs from it. Hits from previous albums were also played and the crowd loved every minute of it even when singer Dan Sanders jumped into the mosh pit mid song and kept singing and playing guitar. The AFL song of the moment, Snakeskin, was a huge favourite for the crowd along with Doctor, Doctor, 1981 and Safe Forever. Gyroscope have gone from strength to strength over the past few years and watching them live just proves that they are one of the best Perth bands around.

2008 Perth Big Day Out Review

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

It was that time of the year again when the music lovers of Perth gathered in their thousands to attend the penultimate music festival of the summer. This year saw a slightly older crowd rocking out at the Claremont Showgrounds as one of the headlining acts had not played a Big Day Out festival since 1996 and had been broken up for 7 years (Rage Against The Machine) and the other headlining act had not played a Big Day Out festival since 1994 (Bjork). With the temperature set to be in the high 30’s, the day was set to be a scorcher but even early in the day the crowd walking through the entrance were filled with anticipation.

Perth’s own The Dirty Secrets were first on the Green Stage and, although the crowd was still building up, they had a great position to introduce themselves to new fans. Situated right in front of the main entrance, The Dirty Secrets brand of indie rock was a nice surprise for people as they walked in collecting their maps and programs. Even if they had never heard of The Dirty Secrets before plenty of music lovers wandered up to the stage to check them out and plenty of them would have been won over by the local boys.

Next up on the Green Stage were Melbourne based band, British India who created a stir in 2007 with their debut release Guillotine. The boys had a frenetic energy on stage, running around non-stop apart from making a comment that became all too common throughout the day: “Fuck it’s hot in Perth!!”. The crowd agreed with the comment but it didn’t stop them rocking for the forty five minutes British India were on stage, especially when Triple J favourite ‘Tie Up My Hands‘ was played.

Playing at the same time but on one of the main stages were radio darlings of the moment Operator Please. A very different crowd were situated in front of the Blue Stage with a much younger demographic obviously targeted to the much younger Operator Please. A lot of jumping around and hand claps were heard throughout the main stage area and all the touring that the band have done recently has definitely raised their confidence in their abilities to play to a large crowd. A smart and successful cover that was part of the Operator Please set was Devo’sWhip It‘ but the biggest crowd pleaser was the ARIA Award winning ‘Just A Song About Ping Pong‘.

The first political band of the day were on next on the Orange Stage - Anti-Flag. A somewhat older punk band, Anti-Flag have built up a fan base since forming in 1993 and had a polar opposite crowd than Operator Please. Fans enjoyed the set that covered songs from all their albums but with the temperature rising the punk rockers did look quite uncomfortable while playing on stage.

With album number three only a month away from being released, Perth boys Gyroscope were up next on the Green Stage. With a home court advantage, the Gyro boys seemed as comfortable as if they were playing to a bunch of close mates. Older songs from their early EP’s were played as confidently as the brand new songs from the upcoming album Breed Obsession. After asking the crowd who was born in the same year as them, new single ‘1981‘ was played to a sweating mass of moshers. The song is a great pop/rock track but the use of the drum machine at the start of it was a bit questionable.

One of the real highlights and surprise packets of the day were up next on the Converse Essential Stage. The band was British hardcore/trance rockers Enter Shikari and the crowd that turned up to see them were in for a treat. As they ran out on stage all four members of the band looked as if they had the energy of 20 men, doing cartwheels, climbing speakers and doing something that could have been described as dancing. Playing a plethora of songs from their debut album Take To The Skies, the Enter Shikari set included sing-a-longs, hand claps, sweat dripping from every pore of every person, a huge circle pit around the sound and lighting desk and even a human pyramid that almost made it to five stories. The songs that had the most excitement from the crowd were Return To Energiser, No Sssweat, Johnny Sniper and Sorry You’re Not A Winner.

After a bit of a rest and a bite to eat I got to see the end of Regurgitator’s set on the Blue Stage. With the whole band dressed in white from head to toe it looked like they were ready for a wedding and it seemed even more likely when a few girls in wedding dresses joined them on stage to dance to the final few songs. All their hit singles were played to the happy crowd as they have for four previous Big Day Out festivals. A slightly updated but equally as impressive ‘Song Formally Known As‘ was the final song from their set and the dancing in the mosh pit was a sight to be seen.

Adelaide’s hip hop heroes Hilltop Hoods were up next on the Orange Stage and the crowd swelled to see the ARIA darlings of 2006. As their latest album was The Hard Road Restrung and featured the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, they were also joined on stage by a small string section as well as fellow Adelaide band Lowrider. Clown Prince, Stopping All Stations, The Nosebleed Section and The Hard Road were all highlights.

Returning for their fourth Big Day Out, Grinspoon were up next on the Blue Stage. Playing all their hit singles and songs from their newest album Alibis and Other Lies, the Grinners rocked out like they always do but there seemed to be something missing from them on the day or maybe there just wasn’t anything special. Grinspoon have played so many festivals in the past 10 years that I think we all take them for granted and even with crowd favourite Champion being the final song of the set, it still didn’t have the same punch it has in the past.

For many, Arcade Fire were a huge highlight of the day but for me they seemed to be forcing their music upon the crowd. With ten members on stage at once it was difficult to know what to look at and with multiple instruments being played by each member it was even harder to know what to listen to. They did show glimpses of excitement as members climbed 20-25 meters up the staging while still drumming but a big disappointment was the comment that “Perth has the best crowd but the worst place” in their Big Day Out tour.

Silverchair were up next on the Blue Stage and they were certainly a different band from the one many of the fans remembered. Not only did Paul Mac join them on keyboards, but there was a separate piano keyboard player, a three person brass section (with one member getting hit in the face mid set with a water bottle), backing singers and Daniel Johns newly bleached hair. This helped with the newer songs from Young Modern but the songs that got the biggest reception were still the older, rockier songs including Israel’s Son, The Greatest View and Freak.

It was time for Iceland’s own Bjork to show Perth what she had in store for them but even with a huge crowd in front of her, an even bigger, rowdier crowd started to gather in front of the stage that Rage Against The Machine were to play on in an hours time. Stage theatrics, a kind of marching band, a laser show, canons shooting shredded paper into the crowd were all part of the show that would have delighted any Bjork fan but with so many RATM fans getting impatient it would have been difficult to say she was well received. Hyperballad was a crowd favourite and in her sweet, soft voice Bjork thanked Perth for allowing her to play the Big Day Out.

As Zach De La Rocha, Tom Merello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk walked on stage the collective cheer from the crowd was deafening. It was if every member of the audience had been waiting the entire 7 years that Rage Against The Machine were broken up for this very moment. As they broke into Testify a chorus of ‘Now Testify, now testify, it’s right outside your door’ rang out but about half way through the song the sound went out and it was only the crowd singing that could be heard. After a short time De La Rocha announce ‘Let’s try that again shall we’ and the band jumped into Bulls On Parade as the mosh pit exploded into a mass of excitement. Guerrilla Radio, Sleep Now In The Fire, Calm Like A Bomb, Bullet In The Head and Killing In The Name were crowd favourites as Morello played his guitar in the way that only he can. It was a set that would have fulfilled every RATM fan’s dream and as the temperature finally started to drop there wasn’t a disappointed face to be seen.
