Bob Evans Goodnight Bull Creek Tour

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

It’s all about new things for Bob Evans in 2009 – a new album Goodnight, Bull Creek! released on April 3, a new single Someone So Much at radio now and available digitally now and a new national tour in April/May to top it all off.

Goodnight, Bull Creek is the third album from Bob Evans and was recorded in Nashville with producer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Sheryl Crow) who also produced the last Bob Evans album Suburban Songbook. While keeping you in the palm of his hand with his endearing lyrics and melodies, the album does take a sidestep away from the previous albums to show a different side to Bob.

Someone So Much is the first offering from the album and is available digitally now. It was one of the first songs written for the album and contains the lyrics from the album title. A multi track single will also be available digitally on February 27 and includes the additional album track Power of Speech.

Bob will then take his show on the road in April on the national Goodnight, Bull Creek! tour (WA date to be announced very soon, keep an eye on the website for details). Tickets are on sale Thursday February 19 – check out www.bobevans.com.au or www.myspace.com/suburbankid for ticketing details.

Bob will be joined by his fantastic new band - Malcolm Clark (Sleepy Jackson), Hugh Jennings (End of Fashion, Bob Evans), Ben Witt (The Chemist) and Louis Macklin (67 Special) – as well as special guest Steve Poltz all the way from the USA.

West Coast Blues N Roots 2nd Lineup Announcement

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

The West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival will again deliver the finest collection of blues, roots, soul, rock, R&B, country and world acts from across the globe on Saturday, April 18.

And joining the festivities down amongst the pines on the beautiful Fremantle Esplanade Reserve is the axe-wielding wizard that is Jason Mraz. Mraz is no stranger to the Blues ’n’ Roots, making his WA debut at 2008’s festival. Since then he has exploded into the public consciousness with his album (We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.) selling more than 100,000 copies in Australia alone – the tenth highest selling album of 2008. Three 2009 Grammy Award nominations later and Mraz is truly en route to international stardom.

Also making the journey west for the sixth annual Blues ’n’ Roots is the now world-acclaimed Augie March. It’s been a long and crazy ride for these Melbourne visionaries – from poetic obscurity to the top of the charts. We warmly welcome Augie March to their debut West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival.

Joining our most eclectic line-up yet, crammed into one value-for-money day, is WA’s most acclaimed suburban tunesmith Bob Evans. This is a rare appearance for the loveable lad, who is currently bunkered down in Nashville working on the follow-up to his 2006 ARIA Award winning album Suburban Songbook. Hear his next anthems before anyone else!

Minnesota native Charlie Parr plays the blues like he lives it. So it’s no surprise he’s the next international to join the festival. With a fine pedigree of influences – from Charlie Patton to Dave Van Ronk – Parr works his resonator guitar and fretless banjo like a man possessed. Be privy to the magic, right in the heart of Fremantle.

New Zealand has an outstanding legacy of punching above its weight in bands – and Little Bushman is no exception. Inspired by the blues rock greats – Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and The Who – and including a handful of the Fat Freddys Drop gang, this is a band not to be missed.

And adding the spice to this final announcement for the sixth annual West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival is Melbourne’s acclaimed Labjacd. This dynamic nine-piece outfit have been making a big splash lately with their exhilarating mix of old school hip hop, Cuban salsa, jazz and Andean folk music. And with a new album in the works be the first to hear the new material, only at the Blues ’n’ Roots.

This mighty fine list of talent joins The John Butler Trio, Missy Higgins, Zappa Plays Zappa, Paul Kelly, Easy Star All-Stars, Ben Kweller, Tony Joe White, Blue King Brown, Seasick Steve, Eric Bibb, The Special Beat, Luka Bloom, Blues Traveler, C.W. Stoneking & The Primitive Horn Orchestra, Little Red, Ruthie Foster, Kev Carmody, Rodney Crowell, Whitley, Kora and Mama Kin.

Bob Evans Announces ‘Blind Faith’ Tour

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Bob Evans has returned from recording in Nashville filled with inspiration to hit the road for a national tour this November and December ahead of the April/May release of his third album ‘Goodnight, Bull Creek!’.

The Blind Faith Tour will showcase songs from the new album giving you an insight into what they to expect when ‘Goodnight, Bull Creek!’ comes out next year.

Joining Bob on stage to help perform the songs in intimate duo mode will be Malcolm Clark (ex The Sleepy Jackson). Lucky Melbourne and Perth fans at the Northcote gig and the Kings Park gig will also get to hear the dynamic new band play the first of many gigs to come.

Bob says, “Blind faith - I know it well. It’s driven me to recording a new album that does not attempt to recreate the songs of my past and it will be the magic potion I drink as I present these new songs to live audiences for the first time in a format that I’ve never toured before. How many instruments can two men play at the same time? Will members of the audience, upon being given instruments of percussion, be able to play in time with the music? Will any celebrity musician friends agree to join us onstage? These are just some of the questions we will be seeking answers to as we wind our way around the country throughout November on the “Blind Faith Tour” of 2008.”

2008 In The Pines Review

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

The beautiful surroundings of the Somerville Auditorium in UWA was again host to the best local band music festival around, In The Pines. Although the weather was kind of gloomy and their had been rain the few days before today, the Somerville grounds were only slightly muddy and plenty of fans had brought their picnic rugs, blankets and pillows. 20 bands were playing today so it was a long, fun-filled day for those that arrived early but there were many people trickling through the gates all afternoon.

The first band I got to see were dirty rockers The Homicides and there were plenty of hardcore punks up the front giving as much shit to the band as the band was giving to the crowd. The music was loud, it was fast and it seemed that it was more of an attitude that fans appreciated than the lyrics or melody. Sure there were bottles of water and sticks thrown on stage and at the band but it all seemed that it made the show more interesting than just an average band playing average songs.

Up next on the second stage were indie rockers Kill Teen Angst and the mood of the grounds did a complete 360. It was like a polar opposite punk show to The Homicides. Instead of the angry, Sex Pistols style punk it was an almost emo, modern style punk show that concentrated on the music. The songs were played with talented precision - guitar, bass, drums and vocals were all outstandingly played to perfection and the crowd would not have even thought about throwing anything on stage during the set.

Another change in musical style saw The Tigers up next playing their avant/rock grooves that the band have been playing around Perth for many, many years. Their songs are more atmospheric than anything else and keyboard mixes beautifully with haunting guitars and great drums. With some tunes lasting 6-7 minutes and their set only allowed to be 30 minutes, there were only a few songs played but it probably worked out well that way as it was easy to lose interest after a little while. But The Tigers are an institution of the local scene and it was great to see them live again.

Felicity Groom and The Black, Black Smoke looked like they were still ecstatic from their four WAMi nominations earlier this year and the crowd felt that happiness ooze from the stage. Alternative country music has been a popular style with bands in Perth of late and this band was on top of it’s game today. It was a set that not only the people up front could enjoy but those that had gone to the trouble of bringing their picnic blankets could lay back and enjoy the music. Vanessa from Jebediah also got a bit of a warm up for later playing bass for The Black, Black Smoke.

Another member of Jebediah was up next with frontman Kevin Mitchell completing his set as Bob Evans. Looking very relaxed, Bob played songs from his two albums albums on his acoustic guitar, harmonica with a friend on accordion. It was great to hear the ARIA Award winner playing his contemporary style music and the crowd definitely got a lot bigger while he was playing. Don’t You Think It’s Time and Nowhere Without You were huge favourites with the crowd singing along and waving their arms in the air.

After the Noongar ‘Welcome To Country’ and Djiva as well as some food, New Rules For Boats were up next on the first stage. Brother and sister duo Sean and Miranda Pollard shared vocal duties for the rock/pop set as the sun was setting and the atmosphere was getting exciting. There were a few in the crowd that looked like they had been drinking all afternoon and it was starting to take it’s toll but the music was infectious enough to get everybody grooving.

Adam Said Galore are another local band that have been around for years and years and as proof of the years of hard work their live show is perfection. Skillfully playing a wide range of music from their past albums, Adam Said Galore were a crowd favourite for the day and even with a bit of sound trouble, they made it look and sound great. The set was very interesting in that it started off with soft, gentle type songs but by the end it was rocking out with the speakers almost exploding with sound. For a band that have been around since 1994 it was great to see them live once more.

Capital City have built a reputation as one of Perth’s best live bands going around and after this evening’s set they had proven that reputation true. The songs were great, the attitude was fantastic and the band must have made plenty of the crowd proud that they were from Perth. Another band that are one of the best live, local bands going around is The Bank Holidays and they were up next on the second stage. With a small string section helping them out for a few songs, they sounded great and with a cover of The Beatles Helter Skelter as a finisher they had earned a huge applause from the crowd.

Headliners Jebediah were up last and even with a short set they proved they still had it after the extended break over the last year or two. Starting with oldie Monument, the crowd sung along and I am pretty sure I saw at least one girl crying in happiness. New song Comet was played next and sounded fantastic, followed by Fall Down and No Sleep. Another new song, To Your Door, was played and then Kevin Mitchell announced that “this song was written when they were very young and smoked too much pot” before Jerks Of Attention exploded onto the crowd. Final song Star Machine is always a great set finisher and as the band walked off and the crowd screamed for an encore, it was announced that the local council did not allow for music after 10pm which it was now. Jebediah showed they are worthy of the top notch on any local gig and gave just a sneak peak at their new album which should rock just as much as their previous albums.

West Coast Blues ‘N’ Roots Festival - Day 1 Review

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

It was a perfect day for Day one of Fremantle’s West Coast Blues n Roots Festival and the friendly atmosphere of the day was infectious. Walking in the gates, the variety of attendees was quite noticeable with young music fans, older hippies and entire families strolling in side by side. And although the Saturday wasn’t quite sold out as the Sunday was, all of Fremantle seemed to buzzing.

After getting acquainted with the grounds setup, the stages, the food stalls and most importantly the bars the first band I got to see were The Vasco Era who were playing on the Big Top Stage. Apart from their breakthrough hit Kingswood which most of the crowd recognized from Triple J, a big highlight of their set was their Elvis cover Can’t Help Falling In Love With You. These guys are real stars and have a huge amount of potential, it won’t be long before The Vasco Era are near the top of the bill for festivals like this.

Local son Bob Evans was up on the Harbour Stage not long after, playing songs from his debut album and his ARIA Award winning second album ‘Suburban Songbook’. With plenty of room in front of the Harbour Stage fans were able to either come up close to the stage to listen or just sit back on the grass and enjoy the ambience. Bob Evans now seems completely comfortable with the Roots label his music has been called and it will be interesting to see if some of his slower stuff creeps into the next Jebediah album.

One of the best performances of the day was on the Harbour Stage shortly after with UK rockers Gomez. Playing a lot of their hits, Gomez were a huge crowd favourite and they even played a second smaller set to a select few on the Sunday. It was about this of the day that the Freo doctor started to effect some of the sounds coming from the Harbour Stage but Gomez rocked out enough to entertain the crowd.

Xavier Rudd took a little while to set up next mainly due to the fact that he had a thousand instruments that needed to be strapped in for him to play. A bunch of new songs were introduced to the crowd and enjoyed by all and his performance alone might persuade a few to buy his next album. The didgeridoo is an instrument that isn’t seen enough in music festivals and it was definitely a sight to be seen today.

The Cat Empire are a band that could play music festivals only and still be as big as they are now. They have such a feel-good, move-your-body type of music that crowds listening to them don’t even seem to realize that they all dancing as one. Songs were played from most of their albums and all their hits were pumping through the Freo air.

The man that used to busk not too far from Fremantle Esplanade Reserve was on next and boy was he a happy man. Not only was John Butler celebrating his 32nd birthday but his new album Grand National had just reached the number 1 spot on the ARIA charts. Highlights were crowd favourite Zebra and latest single Funky Tonight as well as a bunch of songs of the new album.

The band that were up next did seem quite out of place being included in a Blues and Roots festival but Wolfmother definitely did not seem out of place rocking out on a stage covered in smoke and lights. The Grammy Award winners ripped through a set that included all the radio and crowd favourites ‘Woman’, ‘Joker & The Thief’, ‘Dimension’, ‘White Unicorn’ and a new song that many have been waiting a while to hear. It had been a long day of great music for many people in the crowd and Wolfmother were the perfect way to end Day 1 of The West Coast Blues N Roots Festival.

Thanks to Noodlez for the photos.
