New WA Music Documentary - Something In The Water

Monday, September 10th, 2007

“What is it about Perth, that produces so many good bands?”…

Eager eyes on the other side of the Australian continent now look west, to see what new and unique talent will emerge from beyond their horizon. Eskimo Joe, Snowman, Little Birdy, The Sleepy Jackson and Birds of Tokyo –these are but a few contemporary bands that have defied the tyranny of distance to dominate national airwaves.

But there’s more to the fertile Perth music industry, and its bent for producing some of our finest musicians. The Farris brothers and INXS, Bon Scott and ACDC all materialised in this West Coast capital. Meanwhile, the Triffids managed to change the landscape of Australian music, before returning to their humble roots and home of the Fremantle port town.

In the spirit of other international music documentaries like Hype and Live Forever, Something In The Water explores the rich history, and diverse setting of a hitherto neglected part of Perth’s identity.

…Is it the isolation, the environment or the scene itself? Or is there in fact “something in the water”?

NeverEver Land featuring Daft Punk set for Perth

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Rejoice, Australian earthlings, because Modular Touring & Michael Coppel can confirm that, finally, Daft Punk will bring their now legendary pyramid spectacular to Australia for four live shows of blind-siding robot rock at Never Ever Land, this December.

Never Ever Land is a utopian dreamland: a one day live show and party from tomorrow that features magical music from a seemingly faraway place, conveniently packaged and delivered to you at 4 open air locations around Australia to kick start the summer.

Never Ever Land will be expanding realities around the country and will be in Perth on the following date:

Sunday December 16TH  – The Esplanade – Perth

Accompanying the seminal daft robots is a line up that has been hand picked from Around The World:

The Presets have notched up enough frequent flyer miles in the last couple of years to go with Richard Branson to the moon and back, but have not played on Australian soil for some time. These will be amongst their last shows before they unleash album #2 on the world.

SebastiAn and Kavinsky are from the Ed Banger stable of French producers currently tearing up dancefloors around the globe. SebastiAn has risen to notoriety through his ball-busting remixes of the likes of Cut Copy, Bloc Party, The Rapture and Kelis, while Kavinsky is the scene’s man of mystery, with nary a photo to be seen and the excellent Teddy Boy and 1986 EP’s to his name.

Muscles has gone from a myspace phenomenon to a living breathing festival slaying one man band, with already-anthems Ice Cream and Sweaty in his canon converting fans all around the world. Fresh from supporting Soulwax in the UK and touring Europe, Muscles will hold it down solo at Never Ever Land.

• What more can be said about The Bang Gang Deejays that hasn’t been sung already, the premier party DJ’s, the hosts with the absolute most, the guys that put the why in party, Never Ever Land could simply not be imagined without The Bang Gang. Realise.

Tickets on sale Thursday September 13th @Ticketmaster: Ph:136100 or www.ticketmaster.com.au/daftpunk - www.inthemix.com.au - www.modularpeople.com

Courtesy of EMI, the first release of tickets will include an Australian tour edition of Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005, the anthology of Daft Punk’s career and a great taster of what will be covered by their live shows at Never Ever Land.

Talib Kweli And Scribe Announce October Tour

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

In news sure to electrify hip-hop fans and music lovers Australia-wide, Illusive Entertainment & Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that Talib Kweli and Scribe will be hitting our shores in October to co-headline shows in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane.

This amazing rap/ hip-hop pair will be performing material from their respective new albums, with both Talib Kweli and Scribe each having ascended the lofty heights of solo success. Talib Kweli has become a solo hit since his days in Black Star with Mos Def in the late 1990s. He was even named by Jay-Z and 50 Cent as one of their favourite rappers – high accolades for the Brooklyn native. Kweli firmly established himself as a tour de force in the world of rap music with his debut album Reflection Eternal in 2000, and has since become both a critically acclaimed artist and music industry stalwart, establishing his own record label Blacksmith Music.

The new album, Ear Drum, again highlights Kweli’s serious rap-style, a real alternative to the gangsta rap genre. Fans of Kweli’s unique, brash, attitude-adjusting style will relish the opportunity to see this rap visionary in the flesh, performing pounding tracks from his new album Ear Drum.

Scribe has likewise enjoyed immense success since he shot to stardom with the release of his debut album The Crusader in 2003. The Crusader spawned a steady stream of hits such as Not Many, Stand Up and Dreaming, and spent over 75 weeks in the ARIA Top 40 charts. The tidal wave of Scribe’s popularity resulted in him being voted Australia’s second favourite rapper, losing out narrowly to Eminem, by Rolling Stone readers.

Supporting these two amazing artists will be experimental hip-hop duo DJ Zeph & Azeem. Straight out of San Francisco, this duo have been steadily building a reputation as one of the most underrated hip-hop outfits in the US, and are currently gaining radio airplay in Australia on Triple J. Described as an infusion between “the sound of retro funk, blazing percussion, dub penetration, soul, dance hall and of course slamming hip hop” (M8), Zeph & Azeem are sure to convert a new legion of fans across the nation.
