Head First Interview

Head First are a 3 piece band from Perth with some fantastic achievements behind them and are attracting huge overseas interest. You may not have heard too much about them in Perth but it’s almost certain that they are on the verge of making it huge with exposure on MTV in the U.S and extensive tours of the U.K and U.S.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourselves as a band. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

About 4 or 5 years as Head First, but we played together in high school with a different lineup - evolving into the trio we are currently . Our isolation, (we live in the bush) has led us to focus on exposure overseas, working for almost a year in the UK where we played some juicy gigs, creating some important contacts but our US successes have been more exciting. With a MTV licensing deal and placement of our entire album on American television with an audience in the millions, we expect some great exposure when it’s broadcast later this year. We believe that we are the first Aussie artist ever to have a complete album placed on U.S TV! Head First is currently being aired on 5 radio stations across the States. They are using a grab from our song “UFO“, with it’s didgeridoo, for their station ID. That’s some achievement… for 3 lads from da bush in WA.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Nearly every band out there has a bit of influence, what ever it may be. The greatest is hard to say, but the classic rock’n'roll bands are my favourites and at the moment, still hard to pick, we just like to listen to a broad range of music.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

Melody. That helps big time when writing new songs and Words!! blah blah blah woohoo:-? Solitude does help, but being right in the middle of it all, can spark the inspiration too. Some of our music has a definitive target though, we write songs that aim at gaining exposure through say, a corporate association. ‘Born‘ & UFO are 2 examples. We are currently creating music for a new surf show we have been approached to do songs for.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue to play? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

In Perth, probably Black Betty’s, good rock venue. Leed’s university was huge too. We are a bunch of show ponys.. nah just love the big stage, its way more intense. Rock’n'Roll!

Q. Favourite AFL Team?

The Dockers. There’s other teams ?

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

Generally, a couple of chords or a riff or two, then a bit of melody and a few lyrics, a bass line and some beats. Wack a bit of structure to them and ‘walaa’ you got yourself a song. But each song is different, we may start with some drums first or a hook line, every song develops in its own way or purpose.

Q. Is Myspace good or evil? Why?

Myspace is pretty good, keep in touch with fans and crew, good for networking, personalizing and can show part of your package online for everyone else to get a taste of,cos, everyone wants taste of Head First. The dark side, for bands, is the enormity of it. We are but a drop in a humongous ocean.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

We are off to Samoa this week for some serious surfing, which we are to film for a new surf show for Aussie TV & slotted for international release, sorta like ‘Getaway’ for surfers. Whilst there we’re also doing some prep work for a charity event, could be some big names involved in the gig, can’t say much at this stage though. Just this week we’ve signed an agreement for Quiksilver for the use of our music. We’ve written a song for them called “Roxy girl“. We shall see where that leads! Also, we are focusing on writing some new material, we have been approached by MTV USA chasing some new tracks for US television.
